When it comes to recording my electric guitars, I always choose a simple and efficient approach. Those who know me already know—I’m not the type to spend hours tweaking every single parameter. I’m more of a “plug & play” guy: I plug in, I play, and the tone has to be there instantly.
For most of my rhythm parts, I use my PMC Xavinga, a unique guitar handcrafted by luthier Pierre-Marie Châteauneuf (PMC Guitars). It’s tuned to B standard and equipped with an SP Custom Chaosland pickup, which gives it the depth and power I particularly love.
My lead guitar of choice is my PMC Xav, also built by Pierre-Marie Châteauneuf. Its spalted maple top is absolutely stunning, and over time this guitar has become my favorite. It’s equipped with a Seymour Duncan SH4 bridge pickup, which I use almost all the time. It has that special “mojo”, that unique sonic personality that inspires me instantly. This is the guitar that has recorded a large part of the solos in my discography, and it remains my go-to instrument whenever I want to capture strong emotion.
Over the years, I’ve tried many amp sims and virtual amps, but Neural DSP has completely won me over. Their ease of use is unmatched:
For rhythm guitars, my go-to is the Soldano SLO 100—an amp that needs no introduction. It has shaped the sound of countless great records from the ’80s, ’90s, and even today, like the amazing “III Sides to Every Story” by Extreme. This amp is one of my real-world favorites, and Neural DSP’s simulation is stunningly realistic.
My main preset is “Bruce Gain” by Charlie Griffiths (guitarist for Haken, a band I’m a huge fan of). This tone strikes the perfect balance between power, clarity, and definition—ideal for modern rhythm work.
On some parts, I switch to the Neural DSP Archetype Petrucci. I’m not always a fan of Mesa Boogie tones, but I have to admit that John Petrucci’s setup is outstanding.
I mostly use the “Awaken the Master” preset, which offers precise, cutting saturation—perfect for more technical riffs.
For my melodic solos and lead lines, I use the Neural DSP Archetype Tim Henson with the “W6RST Lead” preset. This tone is bright, articulate, and inspiring—perfect for smooth, expressive phrasing.
When I need a more aggressive, metal-oriented lead, I go back to the SLO 100, this time with the built-in “SLO Lead”preset.
One often-overlooked yet crucial element for achieving precise playing—especially in a metal context—is the pick choice. I use Dunlop Tri Stubby 3.0 mm picks. Their thickness and rigidity provide surgical precision and powerful attack, making them perfect for fast riffs and technical leads. This detail, combined with the right tone settings, makes a huge difference in the final sound.
