Because melody is the cornerstone of compelling and memorable music, it is sadly all too often forgotten in favor of rhythmic ease or inflated virtuosity.
Many musicians today haven’t grasped this. Just take a look at the endless parade of instrumentalists “posing” on YouTube, unleashing torrents of notes with often exceptional technique (which is becoming the norm as the general level keeps rising) — it’s hard to deny.
And yet, the composer who will always stand out is the one who touches the listener’s heart with a well-placed note and a thoughtful counterpoint. The great bluesmen have known this forever: technique for the sake of technique is only surface-level.
The magic of melody is what captivates the ear — that almost astral harmonic alignment still has a bright future, thanks to the infinite combinations it allows. It’s what makes music exciting and beautiful, fascinating and enchanting.
